Boss gets upset at retail employee for using their whole 1hr lunch break: 'He will also try and guilt trip me into getting back to work'

Your lunch break is one of the only sacred moments you get at work. Otherwise, you fork your time completely over to them the whole time you're there. It's kind of the point of a job, you give up your time. But that precious half-hour, or if you're lucky, an hour that you get to quickly chow down on whatever you brought… that time is golden. Nobody gets the right to interrupt you. You're knee-deep in a tuna melt and you wouldn't have it any other way. You need that time with that sandwich, and you're not at work right now-- you're on break. 

Break is not only important in order to feed ourselves, but it's also important to give ourselves a moment away from our jobs. It actually makes us more productive in the long run. If we're well-rested and get plenty of time to ourselves, it's easier to show up to do a good job every day. But some employers don't quite understand this, and expect too much of us over the course of the day. That's what happened in this story.

  • bathroom breaks, there's really nothing they can do about that. It really helps if the other staff likes you so be yourself and always kind, so if the boss is an a hole it stands out. But the most important in customer service is to every once in while go out of your way for a customer just enough for it to get back to boss in the form of a good review.
